HockeyPropsect.com has released their October Top 30 Prospect Rankings list for the 2014 NHL Draft. Once again this month, Sam Reinhart of the WHL’s Kootenay Ice leads the way on the list as the top prospect for this years NHL Draft which will take place in Philadelphia. Reinhart has posted 7 goals and 12 assists for 19 points in his first 8 games.

As is often the case with our early season lists, many players don’t move much in the rankings simply due to lack of viewings or in some cases even no viewings yet this season. One player who did make a big jump after viewings this month is Brendan Perlini. HP scouts were impressed with Perlini back in August at the Team Canada Ivan Hlinka tryouts, but waited until some regular season viewings could be had before placing him in the top 30 list.

Another player back in our top 30 list is Julius Honka. We saw Honka a lot last season playing for Team Finland and placed him in our top 30 in our NHL Draft Black Book at #29. Honka was selected in the CHL Import Draft and has played well earlt this season with Swift Current.

Last month we posted a top 40 list but we have reduced the list back to our regular Top 30 prospects. We have included some honourable mentions for a few players who narrowly missed out making the top 30, it’s very tight this season. A few players from last month slid out of the top 30, Ryan MacInnis from the Kitchener Rangers and David Pastrnak, who would sit at #31 overall if we listed more players. Phil Baltisberger also slid out of the top 30.

Sonny Milano jumped back onto our list after three of our scouts watched him in Indianapolis shortly after our September list was released. HockeyProspect.com also saw Milano in Pittsburgh at the All American Prospects Game.

HockeyProspect.com’s Mark Edwards commented on the October rankings. “I often tell people when I’m asked about lists early in the season to take them with a grain of salt. There are many players on our October list that I still haven’t seen yet this season. Other than attending big events like the ones I attended in Indianapolis and Pittsburgh, I like to focus on prospects close to home before I travel to the QMJHL and other areas.”  Other HP scouts follow their own turf closely and have attended numerous games already but it takes time to see everyone. “Our guys, myself included, create schedules and try to hold to them. League schedules can dictate our viewings on when we see  players. We will see everyone plenty of times eventually, we always do.” Edwards added.

Our next rankings will be released in December.
