Nov 23, 2012. Detroit Compuware vs. Toronto Jr. Canadians
Det#11 F Brendan Warren. Was just average in this game. Displayed great footwork and good speed going north and south up and down the ice, however
[sociallocker]lacked any sort of jam or offensive punch once he entered the offensive zone. Exceptional skater but did not beat any defenders 1-on-1 entering the zone. Worked hard on the back check and saw time on the power play and penalty kill.
Det#4 D Sean Day (2014). Exceptional stand out player in this game. May be one of the best skaters I have seen at this level. Can skate himself out of any situation and is back in the play with two powerful strides. Did not panic with the puck and made the right decision almost every time. Had a beautiful end to end rush in this game and is very highly offensively talented. Was not overly physical however with his skill it does not affect his game. Jumped off the charts in all categories and is worthy of exceptional status if he wants it.
JRC#3 D Zac Wilke. Was very engaged physically in this contest. Shows good vision and poise with the puck in the defensive zone. Consistently agitating the top players on the other team both during the play and after the whistles. Displayed some nice offensive skills jumping into the rush on a few occasions. Needs to pick pinch opportunities a little better as sometimes going for the big hit causes odd man rushes the other way.
JRC#71 F Mascherin (2014). Stood out as a solid offensive presence for the JRC today. Scored two nice goals, including a top shelf laser coming down the wing. Was the biggest offensive threat for the JRC in this game. Seemed to generate chances on almost every shift. Good awareness in the defensive zone to help out when needed. A player to keep an eye on in the 2014 draft.
Nov 23, 2012. Mississauga Rebels vs. Southern Tier Admirals
MISS#44 F David Zeppieri. Big powerful forward, used his body well, winning numerous battles along the boards and in the corner. Skating is an area that needs improvement to succeed at the next level. Goes to the net hard and consistently generates scoring chances in front of the net. Plays in all situations for the Rebels and logs major minutes.
MISS#91 D Austin Clapham. Big solid defenseman plays a lot of minutes on the Rebels blue line. Controlled the power play well, making smart passes and displaying a solid hard shot. For being a bigger kid, did not play overly physical in this game. Footwork needs some improvement, but an active stick helps keep opposing attackers to the outside.
STA#57 D Connor Walters. Captain of the Admirals, logs major minutes in all situations for the Admirals. Displayed an active stick on several occasions breaking up passing plays and counter attacking. Made several smart decisions with the puck and did not panic when looking for an outlet pass. Scored a nice 4-on-4 goal that beat a screened Rebels goaltender. Threw a few solid hits in this game and set the tone of the game early with aggressive play. Continues to improve at each viewing.
STA#97 F Michael Davies. Strong power forward, is constantly on or around the puck whenever he is on the ice. Has dynamic offensive skills including one of the hardest wrist shots I have seen in the age group. Strong powerful strides allow him to work well in the defensive zone helping to get the puck up the ice when needed. Occasionally in this game took some long shifts that affected his ability to back check towards the end of them. Banged home a hard working garbage goal from the side of the net that tied the game with 1 minute remaining. Is the guy the Admirals want with the puck on his stick in critical moments.
Nov 24, 2012. Ottawa Senators vs. Detroit Compuware
OTT#27 D Kris Myllari. Power play quarterback for the Senators shows good offensive smarts and vision directing players where to set up and controlling the puck well. Made a bad pinch on one of the power plays which led to a shorthanded breakaway goal for Compuware. Besides that miscue, played a generally solid game. Does not panic with the puck in the neutral zone and makes solid consistent breakout passes. Uses his body well to ward off opposing forwards and is not afraid to mix it up physically down low. Skating is not an absolute glaring area of improvement although that would probably be the area that requires solidifying to round out his game.
DET#4 D Sean Day (2014). Was by far the best player on the ice for both teams during this game. Never seems to find himself out of position and even if it seems like he is, his skating ability allows him to be right back in the play within two strides. Plays like he is much older than he really is when he is on the ice. Looks almost as if he could jump right into the OHL or NCAA ranks today. Displayed elite offensive skills throughout this game, including sneaking down back door from the point and roofing home a nice goal. Extremely smart player uses exceptional poise and vision to make the smart play every time. One downside to his game is a lack of physicality but this should improve with maturity.
DET#10 D Nick Boka. Big strong physical defender consistently shut down the defensive zone and made it hard for the Senators to generate an attack when he was on the ice. Has an active stick that keeps rushers to the outside lanes and intercepts passes with good vision and jump. Picked pinch opportunities well keeping the play alive on a few occasions and dishing out a solid hit on another. Average offensive instincts, suited more for a solid depth shutdown role. Improved as the tournament progressed.
DET#11 F Brendan Warren. Exceptional skater used good outside speed to get around defenders on several occasions in this game. Uses a combination of good footwork and quick feet to be one of the better north/south skaters of the age group. Was exceptional on the faceoff dot in this game, including several clutch wins on the power play. Lacked an offensive touch or creativity once entering the offensive zone in this game, had a few chances due to solid positioning but could not find the back of the net. Very hard working player did not seem to take any shifts off and contributed in the defensive zone as well.
Nov 24, 2012. SSM Thunder vs. Whitby Wildcats (Silverstick)
SSM#7 F Adam Mcphail. One of the bigger kids height wise in this game, needs to fill out more however to be able to consistently contribute physically. Skating was average and an area that could see some improvement. Hard worker was consistently battling down low in the offensive zone. Used his size to shield defenders driving to the net on a few occasions. Good positioning in both ends of the ice was able to help defenders chip pucks out along the boards when needed.
SSM#18 F Blake Speers. Played a strong two way game in this matchup with SSM. Showed good feet displaying both outside speed down the wing and catch up speed on the back check. Logs a lot of minutes for SSM including penalty kill and power play times. Above average player although nothing jumped out in this game as being elite. Quickness and agility was his greatest strength. Displays some nice offensive skills as well generating the majority of the scoring chances for SSM in this game. Needs to be consistent in using his offensive skills and creativity more to beat defenders 1-on-1.
WBY#93 D Justen Long. Stood out initially because of his size on the back end, impressed as well for being a solid physical defender. Had an active stick on several occasions breaking up passing plays and knocking pucks off attackers sticks with a long reach. Skates okay for a bigger kid, however needs to polish it off to succeed at the next level. Needs to consistently move pucks quicker to the wingers or center on the breakout, held on too long on a few occasions allowing defenders to get into passing lanes.
WBY#61 F Hayden McCool. Was a dominating offensive threat for the wildcats in this matchup. Scored two nice goals, the first on a laser of a wrist shot that beat the SSM goalie high and the second was a quick wrister that finished off a nice passing play. Used his speed to consistently get him into open scoring opportunities. Used size well shielding defenders when driving to the net. Shows good vision and scoring touch, generating lots of opportunities for him and his line mates. Shown consistent improvement as the season has progressed and seems to get better with each viewing. Rated an above average score in all categories, needs to maximize his footwork a little bit to gain that extra gear of speed that would complement his offensive skills.
Nov 24, 2012. Elgin Middlesex Chiefs vs. Detroit Compuware
ELG#9 F Travis Konecny. Was absolutely dominant in this game and was the best forward on the ice for either team. Showed elite speed on numerous occasions beating defenders both with outside speed and breakaway speed. Scored two great goals, including an absolute laser far side top shelf that the goalie stood zero chance at saving. Showcased a dynamite wrist shot and a solid scoring touch on both of his goals. Not afraid to get physical, even initiating contact when necessary. Is very shifty with the puck and stick handles and dekes all without losing a step of speed. If I had to pick one negative, it would be defensive zone awareness, sometimes over skating in pursuit of the puck and leaving an open man. Needs to improve his faceoff skills as well as one lost draw led to a Compuware goal and another led to a shot hitting the post. Had the large crowd in awe whenever he was on the ice.
ELG#77 F Lawson Crouse. Big bodied power forward. Showed promise driving to the net on a few occasions and worked hard in the gritty areas of the ice to win puck battles. Good work along the half boards shielding the puck with his body. Does not shy away from physical contact and uses his size to overpower the average defender. Skating is an area that needs improvement, but I think that is more a case of growing into his body. Good defensive zone awareness successfully chipping out pucks when they came his way. More of a straight ahead attacker as did not display much creativity in trying to beat defenders 1-on-1. Solid offensive instincts inside the offensive zone, finding open lanes and avenues and keeping his head up with the puck looking for open teammates.
ELG#91 D Cole Mayo. Played a decent defensive game. Does not panic on the back end when attackers are coming and generally finds good outlets to move the puck up ice. Plays in all situations including power play and penalty kill for the chiefs. Good power play quarterback from the back end works well with Konecny to run a solid power play unit. Active stick, kept opponents to the outside on the rush and didn’t allow any to get a step on him. Good skater, shows good lateral movements and can skate himself out of trouble when needed.
DET#4 D Sean Day. Played another outstanding game on the back end. Elite skating ability, allows him to do just about whatever he wants out there. Did not receive as much ice as usual, although this is the strongest opponent faced over the weekend to this point. Contributed offensively, generating a strong counter attack after breaking up oncoming rushers. Skates himself out of trouble well, although he occasionally runs out of room and could benefit from moving the puck to his forwards quicker.
DET#2 D Grant Gabriele. Not as big of a name as some of his teammates, really began to stand out as the tournament progressed. More of a shutdown defender uses size well to knock forwards off the puck. Very calm and patient with the puck, does not force play instead waiting for the right moment to make a solid outlet pass. Found forwards very well on breakouts and moved the puck up ice consistently. Jumped into the rush a few times this demonstrated an underrated skating ability. Will be an interesting player to see if his development continues throughout the season.
DET#11 F Brendan Warren. Did not receive as much ice as usual as the game progressed, not sure if this was injury related or a coaching decision. Was very strong on the faceoff dot and rarely if ever lost a draw in this game. Stands out for great skating ability, still however lacked much offensive creativity once entering the offensive zone. A consistent scoring touch would go a long way in cementing his position as one of the higher end players of this draft.
Nov 23, 2012. Toronto Marlboros vs. Brampton 45’s
TML#7 D Joshua DeFarias. Should receive more ice than he does, very underrated player who has really improved as the season has progressed. Makes smart decisions with the puck when under pressure, rarely panics and finds good outlets. Solid skater does not let attackers beat him to the outside. Fairly active stick, with some work on his vision and reading the play a little better this will improve. Solid in the offensive zone, finds good lanes to take shots and good opportunities to move the puck to the wingers.
TML#16 F Dylan Strome. There is no argument that once he enters the offensive zone, he is one of the most talented playmakers at this level. Finds good passing lanes and sets up line mates in exceptional positions to score. Uses his big body to shield defenders off the puck when driving to the net or hunting for rebounds. Needs to shoot a little bit more instead of looking for that extra unnecessary pass. Skating is the biggest issue, does not possess elite speed, and needs to work on turns and transitions.
TML#27 F Mitchell Stephens. Elite footwork and speed, consistently beats defenders with a variety of outside speed and shiftiness. Great starts and stops, one of the fastest first three steps in this age group. Solid two-way player was consistently back checking and working hard down low in the defensive zone to help alleviate pressure. Has a good scoring touch, generating chances and opportunities from a variety of positions in the offensive zone. Not afraid to initiate physical contact and does not shy away from oncoming defenders.
BRA#18 F Jack Jeffers. Does not jump off the page at being exceptionally elite in any category, however always seems to find a way to consistently generate offensive chances. Scores or gets an assist in almost every Brampton game. Very steady player, who rarely makes a mistake, is defensively reliable as well. Footwork is an area that needs improvement to elevate his game to that next level.
Nov 23, 2012. Barrie Colts vs. Oakville Rangers
BAR#7 D Tyler MacArthur. A very calming presence on the Colt blue line. Big bodied defender, skates well for a kid his size. Does not get beat on the outside using a long active stick to keep attackers from driving the net. Shows good offensive awareness, picking the right opportunities to jump into the play. Displays a good shot from the point, and good smarts on the power play deciding between a shooting opportunity and a passing option. Sometimes forces breakout passes when being pressured, needs to slow things down in the defensive zone and keep his head up to find open outlet options.
OAK#11 F Cody Petawabano. Big power forward, uses his size well in front of the net and on the cycle in the offensive zone. One of the bigger kids at this age group, skates surprisingly well for such a big guy. Keeps his head up through the neutral zone always looking for options to move the puck. Does not possess an elite scoring touch, gets majority of opportunities in tight of the crease area, banging home rebounds or loose pucks. Has a heavy shot which is to be expected from someone of his size. Needs to add some consistent physicality to his game, should be able to crash and bang and intimidate opponents on the fore-check, however does not seem to do it regularly.
OAK#66 D Matt Spencer. Solid all-around defender. Is strong in the defensive zone as well as the offensive zone. Big strong strides, allow him to jump into the rush as well as make it back to the point when needed. Has a physical edge to his game, is always looking for opportunities to catch forwards with their head down. Long active stick, is rarely ever beat 1-on-1. Possesses a strong point shot and great vision finding open teammates when necessary. Over skates and runs around on occasion in the defensive zone, maturity and coaching should solve this issue down the road.
Nov 24, 2012. Kingston Jr. Frontenacs vs. Edmonton Bulldogs
KGN#16 D Chase Hawley. Big bodied defender with strong defensive instincts. He uses his weight in front of the net to outwork opponents and is not shy about initiating physical contact. Uses an active stick to separate attackers from the puck, or to keep rushers on the outside. He makes good, solid outlet passes and is adept at moving the puck up the ice. Has a solid shot from the point, keeps it low for his teammates to connect with good tips.
KGN#19 F Aaron Luchuk. Solid skater who has good edgework and is effective at stopping and starting quickly. One of the better playmakers of the age group uses strong vision and awareness in effectively moving the puck his line mates. Uses his skating ability to come off the wing to create plays for his teammates off the cycle game. Works hard along the boards to win puck possession battles and gain scoring opportunities. Consistency is the biggest issue, needs to keep the high compete level going on every shift, sometimes takes shifts off throughout the game.
Nov 24, 2012. South Central Coyotes vs. Nickel City Sons
NKL#20 D Cameron Lizotte. Big sturdy defender uses size as an advantage in the defensive zone knocking smaller opponents off of pucks. Needs to bring a high compete level every shift, sometimes seems uninterested out there. Projects into the role of a shutdown defender at the next level. Uses a long stick effectively, needs to work on footwork to not get beat on the quick counter attack. More of a big lumbering type skater needs to maximize his movements to generate better speed and agility. Offensive instincts need some work, although does have a solid shot when he gets the opportunity to get it off in space.
NKL#91 F Scott Villeneuve. Big bodied physical power forward. Was especially impressive on the dump and chase, crashing into defenders and consistently winning puck battles when getting into the corners. Good footwork beating defenders down low and driving to the net on a few occasions. Needs to work on offensive creativity as he was more of a head down bull rush type guy in this game. Had a strong work ethic always chasing the puck whenever he was on the ice and back checking hard. Is most effective when crash and banging down low, needs to bring this intensity every shift and stay consistent and keep using his size as an advantage.
