5 Nations Tournament in Kravare and Poruba, Czech Republic

From February 4th-8th the U18 5 Nations tournament will take place in the Czech Republic. USA, Sweden, Finland, Russia and the host Czech Republic team will compete.

It’s not quite as strong a crop for Euros playing at home this year as compared to other years. Many of the top Euros are playing in the WHL, OHL and QMJHL this season. Having said that, there is still some great talent playing overseas, many of whom will be playing in this 5 Nations tournament.

One player who might make himself a little more well known is Denis Guryanov of Russia (ranked 26th on our Denis GHockeyProspect.com Jan 15th NHL Draft Top 30). Guryanov played well earlier this year at the Junior ‘A’ Challenge and has played some good hockey at home in the MHL & even a few games in the KHL. He’s good skater, has size at 6’2.5″ and his shot is impressive. We won’t be surprised if his name begins to get mentioned more often as the calendar inches closer to June. We obviously like his game giving him a 1st round grade.

Russian forward Kirill Kaprizov is on the small side but has been good enough to survive at the KHL level, he is the only KHL regular on the team and scored twice in his last KHL game before joining his peers.

USA is always a big player in these international events with their NTDP. Players like Bracco, White, Matthews and Fischer amongst others, always make them a tough opponent.

A player who our scout in Finland, Toni Rajamäki, doesn’t think get enough credit is Topi Piipponen. Topi has been productive for the whole season even though his team is quite weak. Piipponen is a versatile winger who, to date, has played a small role in the international games keeping him away from the big spotlight.
