2013 NHL Draft: Subway Super Series – Team Russia vs Team OHL November 12, 2012

November 12, 2012, Team Russia @ Team OHL

Game #4 Subway Super Series in Sarnia, Ontario

RUS #24 RC Yakimov, Bogdan (2013) – He has tremendous size and doesn’t hesitate to try and use it along the walls and in the corners. He battled in all three zones

[sociallocker]but lost at times he probably should have won. He didn’t have a great game but didn’t receive a lot of ice either.

RUS #15 LW Nischushkin, Valeri (2013) – First few steps are a challenge but generates very good speed. His skating style could be best compared to that of Alex Galchenyuk’s in last year’s draft year. Valeri forced turnovers on a regular basis in all three zones. He has a laser of a shot but didn’t use it. He was willing to hit at times but wasn’t overly assertive. He is dangerous when he generates speed then protects the puck with his big frame and isn’t afraid to drive the net.

RUS #29 RD Koledov, Pavel (2013) – Koledov was very reliable again for Team Russia and has been arguably their best defenseman in this event so far despite spending a fair amount of time on the third pairing. He won a surprising number of battles along the boards against bigger OHL players. He shows good hockey sense and knows where he should be positionally at all times. Effective at clearing the zone when there is heavy pressure in the defensive zone without icing it and makes the smart pass up ice and on the point in the offensive zone.

OHL #16 LW Rychel, Kerby (2013) – Kerby made a point to finish his checks wherever and whenever possible. He forced turnovers and kept his game pretty simple throughout delivering some of the biggest and hardest hits in this game. Counted around twelve solid hits throughout the game.

OHL #61 LC Domi, Max (2013) – Domi took a good path to the front of the net while on the power play but took an unnecessary penalty negating it while unnecessarily interfering with a Russian defender. He showed quick handling through traffic and uses his low centre of gravity to protect puck in traffic despite taking contact emerging with the puck. Had a couple moments where he created a few chances.

Scouts Notes: Team OHL came out physical, determined and clearly looked like the better team all game long. Ryan Strome (NYI) opened up the scoring with a tremendous shift. He sent a pass from inside his blueline up to a teammate to send them on a break for the net. He went full speed up ice and went right to the net where he picked up the puck and scored the opening goal. He certainly left a positive impression on this game. Tom Wilson (WSH) also left an impression with his physically intimidating play and intelligent contributions at both ends of the ice. Frankie Corrado (VAN) scored the eventual game winning goal going to the net and scoring a nice goal which was assisted by Strome. After Jordan Binnington (STL) shut the door on Team Russia, it appeared Jake Paterson (DET) would team up with him to help Team OHL shutout Russia for an unprecedented third straight Subway Super Series game in Sarnia (Also in 2003 and 2006) however with 36 seconds left in the game Nail Yakupov (EDM) made no mistake with the split second of time and space he was given to get a shot off. Team OHL tied the series with Team Russia heading into the final two games against Team WHL with a 2-1 win in Sarnia tonight.
