Once again this year I will take a stab at mapping out where some of the top OHL Draft prospects may end up when the first round is completed on Saturday morning. Last year I had the first 8 picks correct until Sarnia broke the streak with their selection at the 9th spot. I had a good run with my mocks of the 1990’s and 1992’s and also some average at best mocks in years past as well.
There is some exceptional talent available in this draft, especially the top 8 or so prospects (not including USA born players who won’t be reporting to the OHL) but the draft is not considered a great one overall. Our own scouts reported back early on that they felt the draft might be on the weak side. OHL scouts GM’s, or agents, it didn’t matter who I spoke to, I got the same feedback, “not a deep group this year.” or “weak”. That being said, there have been weaker drafts in the past and players drafted in later rounds continued to develop and became solid players in the OHL. You can always bank on it happening. One position that our scouts agree isn’t weak is between the pipes. Given the struggles a few OHL teams have had recently, this will be an interesting area to watch in this draft. If goaltender Dylan Wells isn’t a 1st round selection, I’m betting he’s gone early in the 2nd round.
We tweeted this morning that Sarnia would announce Jakob Chychrun 1st overall and Sarnia made it official at 11:30m am. So with that completed, here is my mock with the remainder of the first round.
It was a more of a struggle this year choosing players between the 10th & 20th picks. Plenty of speculation out there, so I decided to make a few picks that may be a little bit in the ‘long-shot’ department. Last year Niagara was a key pick that I chose correctly and allowed me to get a few more picks in a row correct. I struggled with their pick because they were high on Barron and seem to have quite a few irons in the fire leading up to today. If I get their pick wrong (my second choice would be Felhaber) my mock could get ugly really quickly.
One thing is for sure, it was the craziest few days with various info out there for any mock I have done.
