Canada wins Ivan Hlinka Tournament

Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team won the gold medal at the 2014 U18 Ivan Hlinka tournament for the 7th straight year, defeating the Czech Republic this year 6-2 in the final.

Canada advanced to the final via a blowout  11-5 win over USA on Friday.

In Saturday’s final, Canada got first period goals from Dylan Strome, Lawson Crouse, Mitch Marner, and Travis Konecny. Canada cruised from there for the eventual 6-2 victory. The Czech Republic got goals from Radek Koblizek on the power play and Lukas Jasek scored with a laser shot that beat Canada goaltender Zach Sawchenko.

Lawson Crouse finished up his tourney adding another goal as did his line mate Nicolas Roy, who added to his points total. Mitch Marner had a goal and two assists in the win and led the team in scoring, Marner had 2 goals and 5 assists for the tournament.

Other strong performers in the tournament included USA’s Thomas Novak who we ranked as a top 30 prospect for 2015 NHL Draft back in May. Novak led the tournament in scoring with 5 goals and 6 assists in 5 games. Novak’s teammate, Brock Boeser and Canada’s Lawson Crouse led the tournament with 6 goals each.

Team USA won 5-4  in overtime on Saturday versus Sweden to win the Bronze medal.
