2012/13 OHL Playoff Preview – 2013 NHL Draft Players to Watch

Eastern Conference

(1) Belleville Bulls vs. (8) Mississauga Steelheads
Bulls won season series 3-1

Jordan Subban – Defenceman, Belleville
Subban became the first Bulls defenceman to score 50 points in a season since 2009/10 when Shawn Lalonde recorded 56 points. He netted 15 goals, including 6 power play markers. He recorded his first OHL hat trick on February 16th and had four games of 3 points or more.

Spencer Martin – Goaltender, Mississauga
Martin went 1-2 with a 1.67 GAA & .937 save percentage against Belleville this season. The Steelheads only scored 9 goals in 4 meetings with the Bulls, so he will need to be at his best if Mississauga wants to make a series of this opening round matchup.

(2) Barrie Colts vs. (7) Kingston Frontenacs
Colts won season series 3-1

Alex Fontinos – Goaltender, Barrie
Fontinos only played in 19 games this season and may not see much/any ice time in the playoffs, but if needed, he has experienced playing against Kingston. He made 38 saves in a 3-2 shootout victory against the Frontenacs on February 1st.

Ryan Kujawinski – Centre, Kingston
Kujawinski finished second on the Frontenacs in points after scoring 17 goals & 31 assists in 66 games during his sophomore season. He netted 5 power play goals and recorded 14 multi-point games. Ryan could help his draft stock with a strong performance in the playoffs.

(3) Oshawa Generals vs. (6) Niagara IceDogs
Generals won season series 2-0

Carter Verhaeghe – Centre, Niagara
Verhaeghe scored 6 goals & 3 assists in the final two weeks of the regular season, including two game-winning goals. He was 4th in scoring for the IceDogs with 18 goals & 26 assists in 67 games.

Cole Cassels – Centre – Oshawa
Cole heads into the playoffs after posting 15 goals and 28 helpers this saeson. Cassels also recorded 61 PIM.

(4) Brampton Battalion vs. (5) Sudbury Wolves
Battalion won season series 5-3

Mark Raycroft – Defenceman, Brampton
Raycroft is a part of the Battalion defence that finished 6th in goals against this season and held the Wolves to only 17 goals in 8 games.

Nick Paul – Left Wing – Brampton Battalion
The 6’2″ winger has had a solid season for the Battalion. Nick recorded 28 points in 66 games this season.

Nicholas Baptiste – Right Wing, Sudbury
After a slow start offensively, Baptiste picked up his game in December and he hasn’t looked back since, averaging almost a point per game over his last 36 games.
Baptiste was recently voted ‘Most Underrated’ in the OHL Eastern Conference Coaches Poll. He scored 1 goal & 3 assists in 8 games vs. Brampton this season.

Western Conference

(1) London Knights vs. (8) Saginaw Spirit
Knights won season series 3-1

Max Domi – Centre, London
Domi led the Knights in goals (39) and points (87) this season, finishing 9th in league scoring. He scored 2 goals & 6 assists in 4 games vs. Sarnia. Domi was voted 2nd best stickhandler & playmaker in the OHL Western Conference Coaches Poll.

Bo Horvat – Left Wing, London
Horvat scored 33 goals this season, including 17 power play markers (2nd in OHL).
He scored 3 goals & 2 assists in 4 games vs. Sarnia. Horvat finished 2nd in ‘Best on Face-offs’ in the Coaches Poll.

Jimmy Lodge – Centre, Saginaw
Lodge has improved his offensive numbers throughout the season. He scored 15 goals & 19 assists in the final 24 games of the season. In four games vs. London, he recorded 1 goal & 1 assist.

Nick Moutrey – Right Wing, Saginaw
Moutrey improved his stat totals from 2 goals and 7 assists in 2011/2012 to 16 goals and 27 assists this season.

(2) Plymouth Whalers vs. (7) Sarnia Sting
Whalers won season series 4-2

Ryan Hartman – Right Wing, Plymouth
Hartman plays all aspects of the game and his stats show his versatility – 23 goals, 37 assists, 120 penalty minutes, 5 power play goals and 2 short-handed markers. He scored 3 goals & 2 assists in 4 games vs. Sarnia this season.

Daniel Nikandrov – Centre, Sarnia
Nikandrov scored 7 goals & 19 assists in his first full season with the Sting. He recorded 2 game-winning goals in the last 2 months.

(3) Owen Sound Attack vs. (6) S.S. Marie Greyhounds
Attack won season series 2-0

Chris Bigras – Defenceman, Owen Sound
Bigras has played in every situation for the Attack this season while contributing offensively. He recorded 8 goals & 30 assists this season. Five of his eight goals were on the power play.

Zach Nastasiuk – Right Wing, Owen Sound
Nastasiuk scored 20 goals & 20 assists in 62 games this season, including 7 goals & 5 assists in his last 11 games. He scored 1 goal in 2 games vs. SSM this season.

Darnell Nurse – Defenceman, S.S. Marie
Nurse played in all 68 regular season games while recording 12 goals, 29 assists and 116 penalty minutes. He finished 3rd in the OHL Coaches Poll for ‘Best Penalty Killer’ in the Western Conference.

Sergey Tolchinsky – Left Wing, S.S. Marie
Tolchinsky scored 10 goals & 8 assists in the final 16 games of the regular season. He netted 2 goals in 2 games vs. Owen Sound in 2012/13.

(4) Kitchener Rangers vs. (5) Guelph Storm
Rangers won season series 5-3

Justin Bailey – Centre, Kitchener
Bailey scored 17 goals & 19 assists in 57 games this season. He is a streaky player and tends to score points in groups of games. Bailey scored 4 goals & 2 assists in 8 games vs. Guelph.

Jason Dickinson – Left Wing, Guelph
Dickinson recorded 18 goals this season, including 6 on the power play & 2 game-winners. He scored 2 goals & 1 assist in the season series vs. Kitchener. Dickinson finished 3rd in voting for ‘Best Defensive Forward’ in the OHL Coaches Poll.
