From streaking teams to extended point streaks, here’s a look at some of the teams and players that are making headlines in the CHL.
The Erie Otters have won 8 straight games and have not lost on home ice in 2013/14. They own the OHL’s 2nd best power play (30.5%) and have scored at least one PPG in 12 of 13 games this season. The last time their PP was ranked this high was in their championship season in 2002 when it was ranked #4 (20.8%). Erie also has the league’s 2nd best penalty kill unit (88.5).
Blue Jackets goaltending prospect Oscar Dansk (Erie) is on a 9-game win streak. He has a 1.86 goals against average during the month of October, including two shutouts.
2014 NHL Draft prospect Mackenzie Blackwood (Barrie) picked up his first two wins of the season on Oct. 19th & 24th. After scoring just 7 goals in his first 5 games, the Colts provided 8 goals for him in wins over Plymouth and Niagara. Blackwood owns the 4th best GAA in the OHL (2.23), and 6th best save percentage (.919). He improved his record to 1-4-0-1.
Eight OHL players currently have point streaks of 8 games or more, led by Hurricanes prospect Brock McGinn (Guelph, 13 games) and Maple Leafs prospect Carter Verhaeghe (Niagara).
S.S. Marie forward Sergey Tolchinsky recorded a 5-pt game against Peterborough on the weekend. The NHL free agent has scored in 11 of 13 games this season and leads the Greyhounds in goals (11) and points (13).
Scott Kosmachuk (Guelph) is the most recent OHL ‘Player of the Week”. The Winnipeg Jets prospect has scored 8 goals and 6 assists in his last 5 games.
Detroit Red Wings prospect Anthony Mantha leads all CHL players in goals (19) and points (35). He’s already recorded three 5-pt games this season. Meanwhile, his teammates, Randy Gazzola and Guillaume Gelinas, are 1st and 2nd among QMJHL defencemen scoring with 24 & 21 points, respectively.
Montreal Canadiens draft pick Jeremy Gregoire (Baie-Comeau) is on an 8-game point streak which includes 4 multi-point games. He’s tied for 3rd in league scoring with 22 points.
Four of the top 7 goal scorers in the QMJHL are members of the 2013 NHL Draft class – Anthony Mantha (1st – 19), Jeremy Gregoire (T-3rd – 12), Emile Poirier (T-3rd – 10) and Anthony Duclair (T-6th – 10) and
Jerome Verrier (Drummondville) has scored a goal in 6 straight games and is 2nd in league goals (13).
Blainville-Boisbriand goaltender Etienne Marcoux owns the country’s best goals against average (1.72).
Philippe Cadorette (Baie-Comeau) is the most recent CHL ‘Goaltender of the Week’. He’s 7-1 during the month of October with a 1.51 GAA and .944 save percentage.
After starting the season 3-3, the Portland Winterhawks have won 6 straight games. Forwards Oliver Bjorkstrand (7), Brendan Leipsic (7) and Nicolas Petan (6) all have point streaks of six games or more. Petan is the current WHL ‘Player of the Week’.
Mitch Holmberg (Spokane) has scored in all 13 games this season and leads the WHL in goals (16) and points (32). He’s recorded six games of 2 goals or more and leads the league in game-winning goals (4) & plus/minus (+15).
Goaltenders Jordon Cooke of Kelowna (6-0-0-2) and Mack Shields of Calgary (5-0-0-0) are the only WHL goaltenders with a regulation loss (minimum 240 min. played).
Toronto Maple Leafs
A number of Toronto Maple Leafs prospects are playing well to begin the season.
– Carter Verhaeghe (Niagara IceDogs) has scored in all 12 of his OHL games this season (8G, 10A), including a 4-pt & a 5-pt game.
– Connor Brown (Erie Otters) has 5 of his team’s 18 PP goals and leads the OHL in scoring with 29 points (11G, 18A).
– Defenceman Matt Finn (Guelph Storm) has averaged a point-per-game (10 pts in 10 GP).
– Frederik Gauthier (Rimouski Oceanic) is averaging a point per game and has 3 goals and 5 assists in his last 4 games.
