QMJHL Draft: Lac St-Louis Lions vs College Charles-Lemoyne Riverains, Feb 3rd 2013

February 3rd 2013, Lac St-Louis Lions vs College Charles-Lemoyne Riverains

Lac St-Louis:

#4 Jeremy Davies Def (L96)
Davies had a superb game for the Lions. He ended up scoring the game-winning goal in the 3rd period and finished with 3 points. Davies is a finesse type of player who was on the ice for most of this game.

[sociallocker]Effortless skater and top notch stickhandler, he put on a stickhandling clinic on one sequence where he deked 3 different players. He doesn’t have a hard shot from the point, but he’s good at finding lanes to get his shot though. Great passer, didn’t miss too many passes during this game. One flaw I noticed: at the end of his shifts he needs to keep it simple as he got into trouble by forcing the play when he was tired after long shifts. Defensively, he’s got some minor positional work to do and will need to get stronger to contain bigger forwards at the next level.

#6 Skylar Strumas Def (97)
Strumas played a quiet but effective two-way game, didn’t get much opportunities offensively but was a big part of the Lions’ penalty kill. At even strength, he got into trouble a couple of times in his zone but always found a way to get out of it, thanks to his skating and his ability to get the puck out of his zone. Strumas is a tireless worker willing to play a physical game, but lacks strength right now.

#9 Maxime Fortier C/W (L97)
Fortier played a solid game, he likes to use his speed to attack defenders and can generate speed quickly through the neutral zone. Caused quite a few turnovers by backchecking hard. Played mostly on the wing, but had a couple of shifts at center, proving he is a versatile player in addition to being the youngest player of the team (December 97 birthday). Showed some nice stickhandling work & has a nice quick wrister that he likes to use. Fortier is a hard worker whose feet are always moving.

#21 Taylor Ford Def (97)
Ford was quiet in the first half, but was more noticeable in the latter part of the game, as he was paired with the offensive Jeremy Davies on the Lions blueline. Likes to take care of his own end first, started the 3rd period with 2 big hits, stepping up at his team’s blueline. A good skater, he didn’t skate too many times with the puck due to playing with Davies who seems to always be the puck rusher on this pair. But when he did, he was good at it, which made me wish he would do it more often.

College Charles-Lemoyne Riverains

#4 Simon Bourque Def (97)
Bourque played a good all around game for the Riverains, as he scored a nice goal on the power play, hiding back door and finishing a nice pass from teammate Phillipe Chamberland. Played in all situations for his team, a real smart player who broke up lots of plays in the defensive zone with his active stick. Noticed how good he was at keeping puck in the offensive zone, but his skating looks like it might need some improvement.

#5 William Cote Def (97)
Cote was on the ice for every PP opportunity the Riverains got in this game. A player with great vision who can find his teammates with ease. Has very good, quick feet, and uses them well. Had a tough 2nd period, causing quite a few turnovers trying to do too much with the puck, and overall, his even strength game was average at best today. Also had a hard time versus bigger LSL forwards due to his size and lack of strength.
#8 Julien Simonet Winger (97)
Simonet is a good stickhandler who’s very dangerous when he’s close to the net, but he needs to go there more often. Played a little bit too much on the outside in this game, but when he got close to the Lions’ goal, he had some good scoring chances & provoked penalties. Quick skater who is excellent in his puck pursuit on the forecheck, and he even threw some good checks even though he’s not the biggest guy on the ice.

#11 Phillipe Chamberland Winger (97)
Chamberland had an okay game for the Riverains. He made a very nice pass for his team’s only power play goal, setting up his teammate Bourque from the half boards. In my previous viewing he was the guy standing in front of the net on the PP (which I liked), but today, he was the setup man playing on the half boards and did a relatively good job at it. Not the most agile or quick player on his skates, he has a lot of work to do in this department. Could also play a more physical game, as I saw him throw one good hit all game long. A nice project for the QMJHL team that draft him this summer.

#27 Gabriel Gosselin Winger (L96)
Gosselin was a real pain for the Lions defensemen all game long. Easily the most physical player on the ice today, as the pesky forward threw a hit every chance he got. Also got hit pretty hard but didn’t back down. Came close to tying the game late in the 3rd period.[/sociallocker]
